Portable fish finders offer most fishermen something they cannot access without an expensive boat and specialty electronics, and that is a quality, accurate picture of what is happening beneath the water in front of them. All castable fish finders are portable fish finders but not all portable fish finders are castable.

A portable fish finder is simply any electronic fish finder that can be quickly packed up, moved, and deployed without being permanently mounted onto a boat.

Many of these devices are great for use on small boats, off docks, and for ice fishing where you can simply lower the transducer into the water.

Castable fish finders are the next level, in my opinion. These devices are just as mobile as standard portable fish finders but the transducer can be attached to fishing line and cast out away from you.

This affords you a completely different level of access and scouting capability. Of course, these devices can also work very well for small boats, docks, and ice fishing.

Why Would You Want a Portable or Castable Fish Finder?

There are a variety of reasons why you could want a portable fish finder. You can take these devices with you hiking, exploring remote swamps and ponds, to fish aqueducts and canals, for ice fishing, fishing from the bank without a boat.

You can also take them with you on a boat even if you already have boat-mounted electronics because they can allow you to scout out way ahead of where your boat’s sonar can project.

As an example where having a castable fish finder would have been awesome. We went for a hike to a fairly remote mountain lake this past Sunday so I brought along an ultralight spinning rod and some lures in case the lake had some trout in it.

When we got to the lake, I couldn’t see any signs the lake had fish in it. No fry along the bank & no boils of fish feeding on insects.

A castable fish finder could have been perfect for this to quickly determine if the lake even contains fish and where they are. Instead, I just fan-casted until I got bored and decided to just take in the scenery.

This is perhaps the second-best option for castable fish finders on the market. This device is considerably less expensive than the Deeper PRO+ at under $90. It offers pretty strong accuracy and detailed read-outs which can really help identify excellent fishing spots. It will tell you water temperature, water depth, underwater topography, fish location, and weeds.

It is great for mapping sections of water. I like this model the best for ice fishing as it stands up to freezing cold water a little better than the Deeper PRO+ according to reviews.

It is a great affordable option for traveling, hiking, bank fishing, small boats, docks, ice fishing, and even for serious boat fishermen who already have good electronics on-board.

In my opinion, this is the best standard “non-castable” fish finder on the market. It is a great value for the price and provides very detailed read-outs. It has earned very positive customer reviews for its accuracy, effectiveness, and value. You can’t cast the transducer out but you can mount to a small boat or drop it into your ice hole.

Not a good option for bank fishermen, but a really good option for those fishing from jon boats, kayaks, as well as through the ice. I think it is worth you giving it a closer look.

In that regard, I feel like portable fish finders are very effective at delivering fishermen what they promise. These things offer a lot of value for fairly reasonable prices.

Castable vs. Boat-Mounted Fish Finders

While I would agree that castable fish finders don’t quite offer the sensitivity or elite accuracy of many of the most expensive boat-mounted units, they do offer something that boat-mounted fish finders cannot claim. Boat-mounted sonar can only scan down and in a fairly narrow zone around the boat.

But what about 40-yards away alongside that dock you are thinking about casting at? If you were to drive your boat over there close enough for the sonar to get a picture, you will likely spook the fish.

But if you cast the transducer of a castable fish finder, well now you can get a very accurate assessment without going anywhere near where you want to scout.

You can also drop the transducer in the water and let the current move your device along to scout ahead of you and find you fish, current breaks, and the main channel while you park idling in the calm water of the river.

How Does a Castable/Portable Fish Finder Work?

Portable fish finders have a transducer, which is the sensory part of the device, and a receiver which receives and processes the information.

In castable fish finders, the receiver is essentially the app on your smartphone which interprets the data onto your screen for you to view.

Castable fish finders work best when moved slowly across an area of water which allows it to map the floor along a specific path. This can be accomplished by either reeling the transducer slowly, paddling a canoe or kayak slowly along with the transducer in the water, or being allowed to float along as current moves the transducer over a specific area.

Do Castable Fish Finders Work from Shore?

Castable fish finders work extremely well from shore. In times past, no option existed for shore fishermen to accurately see fish, water depth, water temperatures, and cover that was anywhere comparable to what boat-anglers can achieve with their on-boat electronics.

I personally like the Deeper PRO+ and the iBobber. Both of these devices sync to smartphones. With a strong fishing line, you can cast the floating transducers out as far as you can reach and slowly retrieve the device as you reel in.

As the transducer covers water, it will relay information back to your phone’s screen. With these devices, you can pretty accurately map the water’s floor, to see weeds and logs, rocks, determine depth and water temperature, and identify fish as it moves along.

Do Castable Fish Finders Work from a Boat

You may be thinking that you can’t benefit from having a castable fish finder if your boat is already equipped with expensive electronics. I think you really can. Your boat’s sonar can really only detect a specific range around your boat.

But what if you want to know what’s over in that shallow water far in front of your boat? Driving your big bass boat over there close enough for your boat’s sonar to image it will likely put all fish on edge.

But instead, if you simply cast your floating castable transducer over there, you can get a very accurate picture with far less disturbance and greatly reduced risk of startling fish.

You can quickly determine if that water is worth fishing and if it is, pick up your other rod and start casting at it.

If it isn’t, you won’t have wasted any time moving your boat over there and you can move on to find better fishing spots. You can also let the transducer float along with the current and scout ahead of your boat which is very cool.

Now if your boat isn’t fitted with electronics, a castable or even standard portable fish finder can be fixed on a standard boat, a smaller jon boat, a raft, kayak, canoe, and even float tube. If you don’t want to mount your fish finders on these watercraft, you can also just cast your transducer around and let it go to work.

Do Castable Fish Finders Work for Ice Fishing

Both standard portable fish finders and castable fish finders work very well for ice fishing. All you need to do is place the transducer in the water inside your dug hole.

The down-imaging of the transducer sonar will map directly beneath the hole and tell you water depth, where the warmer water temperatures are, as well as the presence of fish and weeds.

With one of these devices, you can quickly determine if a hole is worth fishing or is completely absent of fish allowing you to save time and dig holes elsewhere. I think either having a portable fish finder or an ice flasher is absolutely necessary for any serious ice fisherman to have.

Portable Fish Finder vs. Ice Flasher

This is entirely up to the individual’s ice fisherman’s preference. I didn’t grow up using ice flashers at all. In fact, I spent countless wasted hours fishing holes with no fish because I didn’t own electronics. Many ice fishermen swear by flashers and won’t use anything else.

I personally don’t have this reverence for flashers and I think portable fish finders can tell you a lot more about what’s going on and in much greater detail. Both systems work great but the learning curve is far lesser with portable fish finders which is why I recommend them to most ice fishermen.

Do Portable Fish Finders Work for Kayak Fishing?

Yes, portable fish finders work really well for kayak fishing. You can opt for mounting the transducer fixed on your kayak so the transducer rests gently on top of the water next to the kayak as you paddle.

This will allow you to scan while resting or while paddling. The only real problem is portable fish finders won’t provide good readings in water shallower than 3 feet deep. You can also cast your castable transducer out and slowly reel it back.

Lastly, simply allowing the floating transducer to float downstream in current can deliver you excellent information. If you are serious about kayak fishing, I think both standard portable and castable fish finders are a great option.

They allow you to travel with these devices on planes, hike to remote waterways, fish from banks, and generally offer more versatility than boat-mounted units. They also allow you to use fish finders in ponds and waterways inaccessible to full-sized boats.

Yes, portable and castable fish finders aren’t as sensitive or accurate as boat-mounted units, they offer so much more versatility that they more than make up for a slightly lesser degree of accuracy. They also cost a fraction of the price of many expensive boat-mounted fish finders.
