Cancun: Fishing Through The Seasons

Before booking a charter, take time to note the activity of fish throughout the year so you can know when your target species is biting.

December-February

Expect to find amberjack, barracuda, and king mackerel on a hot bite.  If you plan to fish this time of year, be sure to also ask about wahoo- their slow action in December will heat up for excellent conditions by February.  Bonefish, tarpon, permit action is slow.

March-May

This season offers a chance at a variety of fish.  From March to May, expect excellent action from wahoo and sailfish.  Then be on the lookout for mahi-mahi, white marlin, blue marlin, permit, and bonefish to join the action by May.  Amberjack fishermen, this will be a slow time for you.

June-August

If I had to pick a time of year to fish in Cancun’s waters, this would be it.  Many favorite species have excellent action, including bonito, mahi-mahi, king mackerel, white and blue marlin, sailfish, and wahoo.  Come August when marlin and sailfish slow down, turn your attention to permit, tarpon, and bonefish as their bite remains hot.

September-November

King mackerel and barracuda return to a strong bite, and amberjack will join in on the strong action by November.  The favorite trophy fish of mahi-mahi, sailfish, and white and blue marlin will slow to a weak bite.
